Margaret backs East End bookies

Community the trade union welcomes Glasgow East Labour candidate Margaret Curran taking the time out to support the Safer Betting Shop campaign. She has highlighted the alarming level of betting shop robberies in the Glasgow area, following a recent serious attack.

Community trade union said:

“Our members can be alone in the shop late at night and become targets for robberies. They can feel very vulnerable.

Physical and verbal abuse against staff in betting shops is on the increase. Abusive behaviour, shouting and swearing can be a criminal offence and we are encouraging staff to report it.
As a trade union we are concerned at the unwillingness of some chains to protect their employees and take action to stamp out unacceptable behaviour.”

Only this week the reality and scale of the problem was driven home to the people of the East End when the Bet Fred shop on Shettleston Road was held up at gunpoint.

Margaret Curran said:

“This incident has had an impact on the staff, their family and the whole community of Glasgow East. It is totally unacceptable that people have to work in fear of abuse just for doing their job.
If I am chosen as an MP, I will be campaigning for tighter laws to protect employees in betting shops and other workplaces.”
